To honor the commendable service of veterans at The Roosevelt at Salt Creek Senior Living Community, we embarked on a heartfelt initiative to recognize and celebrate their contributions on Veterans Day. Through strategic planning and collaboration with local organizations, we orchestrated a memorable event that garnered significant media attention and left a lasting impact on all involved.
Through resident interviews, we identified 26 veterans within the community, each with unique stories of service and sacrifice, and a total of 80 years of collective service. We organized a luncheon event for the veterans and their families, scheduled to take place on Veterans Day. Additionally, our team reached out to the local American Legion, the Mayor of Elmhurst, and the Military History Club teacher at the local York High School, inviting them to join our veterans at the event. Finally, we strategically pitched the event to local media outlets, emphasizing the significance of each of the veteran's stories.
The Roosevelt hosted a poignant luncheon event to honor the veterans featuring a touching pinning ceremony, uniting the veterans with students from York High School's Military History Class. Mayor Scott Levin and Commander John Scudder led the ceremony and a special flag-raising which we orchestrated to showcase the exterior of the community which is under renovation.
The event garnered unprecedented media coverage, with all major Chicago broadcast stations - including NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX - and The Chicago Tribune present, showcasing the compelling stories of our honored veterans and the artifacts we curated. The extensive media coverage not only honored the service of our veterans but also fostered deeper connections within the community, strengthening ties among residents, local organizations, and the broader Chicago area.
